Window Frame Painters in Derby

Window frame painting on a cream Victorian detached home in Derby by Derby Painters, professional decorators

Derby Painters are window frame painters covering Derby and the surrounding suburbs, from Spondon and Chaddesden through Mickleover and Littleover to Allestree and the Cathedral Quarter.

  • Timber sash and casement frames re-puttied, sanded, and refinished
  • uPVC frames repainted with specialist primer for a lasting bond
  • Fascias, soffits, and sills included in the same visit where needed
  • Binding sashes freed and runners sanded before painting

Victorian terraces in Spondon, on Dale Road and Locko Road, retain a high proportion of original timber sash windows. Putty failure, paint flaking at the rebate, and binding sashes from accumulated paint build-up are the three most common problems. A proper window frame repaint involves re-puttying where needed, sanding the sash runners, and applying a hard-wearing alkyd primer and gloss rather than standard emulsion.

Window Frame Painting Services

Timber Sash Frames

Original timber sash windows are the most architecturally significant feature of Derby’s Victorian terraces and period townhouses. Putty failure, paint accumulation on sash runners, and glazing bead separation are three distinct preparation tasks before a brush touches the frame.

Re-puttying is included where putty has cracked, shrunk, or pulled away from the glass. New putty must be allowed to cure before painting. Sash runners are sanded free of accumulated paint build-up. We free the sash as part of the preparation process.

Casement Windows

Casement windows across Derby’s 1930s–50s semis in Chaddesden, Mickleover, and Littleover are most commonly painted softwood. We pay particular attention to the bottom rail of each casement — the most exposed part and the first to show paint failure.

For exterior painting on properties where the casement frames are being repainted as part of a full exterior scheme, we co-ordinate the window frame schedule with the masonry work to avoid cross-contamination.

uPVC Repainting

uPVC window frames can be professionally repainted to a high standard. The surface requires a specialist primer formulated to bond to the non-porous material before any topcoat is applied. Standard paint applied directly to uPVC peels within weeks.

Colour change on uPVC frames is increasingly popular across Derby’s 1970s–80s and 1990s properties in Oakwood, Allestree, and Spondon. Surface preparation includes cleaning with a specialist degreaser before priming.

Fascias, Soffits, and Sills

Fascias, soffits, and window sills are part of the same exterior timber system as window frames. Repainting window frames whilst leaving sills and soffits unpainted leaves the exterior incomplete.

Timber soffits on Derby’s inter-war and post-war housing require the same preparation as window frames. Sills on north-facing elevations are more prone to moisture retention and often need a mould treatment before repainting.

Preparation and Priming

The primer coat is the most important part of any window frame repaint. We use alkyd-based primer on timber frames for its superior adhesion and moisture resistance. For door painting on the same property, we treat window frames and door frames as part of the same exterior woodwork scheme where practical.

Number of Windows

More windows mean more preparation time and more product. Price scales with the number of frames, not just the size.

Condition and Putty

Windows requiring re-puttying or significant paint removal take longer to prepare than those in sound condition with intact putty.

  • Four casement windows (exterior): £380 to £600
  • Six timber sash windows (re-puttied and refinished): £800 to £1,200
  • Full exterior woodwork (windows, fascias, and sills): £1,000 to £1,800

Frame Type

Sash windows take longer to prepare and paint than casement windows due to the sash runner sanding and additional moving parts.

A decade of work across Derby’s Victorian terraces and period properties means we have seen every stage of timber window frame deterioration. The most expensive windows to repaint are those left too long between repaints. For timber staining and treatment on wider exterior woodwork, see our wood painting page.
